One part in Erard’s article that sparked my interest was when he was talking about the “upstairs brain” and the “downstairs brain.” It made sense how the person thought by telling his son to use his “upstairs brain” would make him want to behave well and have a good social life. The “downstairs brain” works on the love, excitement, curiosity, and other emotions. But by telling his son that he should use his “upstairs brain”, his son thought that since his “downstairs brain” was downstairs it was worthy enough to use. I think it’s odd how one person can look at something and then another person can look at it with a whole different perspective. Also through time the meaning of metaphors can change. Another part in the article that sparked my interest was when they were saying that people will poke at the little things like the window sashes but once they look out the window they will see the bigger picture. When they “look out the window” it will be unfamiliar and offers a new view to the outside perspective. But when they only focus on the “window sashes”, or the little things, the perspective won’t be as clear and won’t make as much sense. This article was kind of hard to read but once I started thinking about it more, it made a lot of sense.
